We had a wonderful day traveling to Leipzig today! Originally, the plan was to go to a theatre to see an operatta that none of us knew existed (Der Waffenschmied?), but as a result of our van rubbing against someone else's car on the way out of a parking lot in Leipzig, we had to wait for police to come to run a report and missed the show. That was actually perfectly fine by us because we wanted a chance to explore Leipzig anyway.
Before the car accident that afternoon, we had a chance to visit the St. Thomas Church, a very significant historical monument, at least to musicians. In 1539, Martin Luther had come to preach there to introduce the Reformation, and from 1723 to 1750, J.S. Bach had come to serve as Cantor in Leipzig. Also, in 1789 W.A. Mozart had played the organ at this church, and in 1843 Felix Mendelssohn initiated the performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion. Although the church functioned as somewhat of a Bach museum in itself, right across the street is an official Bach museum. David and I had a chance to roam around it. I wish I had more time and brain power to soak up all the historical details of that museum, but unfortunately the museum was closing for the day before I could read everything. What a privilege to walk around where Bach had been!

Bach is buried here in the Thomaskirche.
Walking towards the church
There are a lot of street musicians, and they're good!

There was a random trampoline in the ground...
