Today was quite an interesting day for me. Lots of new and neat experiences.
I was not as terrified in my voice lesson as I thought I might be, and I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. With only 20 minutes, we just did some warm-up exercises to experiment with feeling my diaphragm. It was pretty insightful and helpful for me to get to know my personal diapham.
It turns out that when you purchase recyclable goods, the price advertised on the shelf is lower than what you actually pay. Two prices show up on your receipt: one is the shelf price and the other is an additional price that you could potentially get fully refunded if you return the items--in this case, the empty plastic bottles--back to the store. What I bought was advertised as 1.14. I paid 2.64 in the checkout, but if I return all 6 bottles when I'm done drinking all the water, I can get refunded 1.50. Neat concept, huh?
Another neat thing is exercising 3 different languages in one conversation. I decided I really felt like exercising my Vietnamese tongue, so I conversed with a Vietnamese cashier from a fruit and vegetable shop. We talked for a good 15 or 20 minutes at least. He told me he moved to Freiberg because of the weather. There was a lot of broken Vietnamese here and there, and I want to say that were we 89% successful in communicating. I also purchased plums and apples. One plum was not as good as my 15 or 20 minute conversation. Here is a picture of a squishy spot that I had to burrow out.
Incidentally, it's the only picture I took from today. Sorry!
Lastly, I just found out that I won a graduate fellowship for $5000, so hurray for defraying graduate tuition costs!!!
yum
