Tidbits on German culture (according to class):
1. They don't believe in using air conditioning. They think it's not good for you and that you'll always be catching colds when it's on.
2. They don't usually refrigerate milk.
3. Water is not free. I think beer is cheaper.
4. After finishing the 4th grade, a child's educational path is determined by the parents and teachers. In other words, they decide whether or not the student is cut out for going to college. Also, from that point on, the student is on a track to become a specialist, which means no general studies.
5. Students are on winter and summer semesters, and there are no requirements for studies in the humanities.
6. German people separate their business life from their personal life. It's unusual for someone to hang out with colleagues on the weekend.
7. German people like to keep distance from people and are territorial.
Some words I've learned:
Entschuldigung - Sorry or excuse me
Geschwindigkeitsüberschreitung - speeding
Asians have some similar ideas when it comes to AC...
ReplyDeleteAnd that is quite a word for speeding!
How many times per minute can you say "speeding" in German? Looks like you're keeping real busy and are having a lot of fun! Hope your jet lag is gone by now. I enjoy reading your tidbits.
ReplyDeleteI came upon the word by accident while dictionarying. It has to be one of the biggest words in there. Perhaps. I feel a challenge to find a bigger word.
