My update is coming late today because I spent forever trying to write out my schedule of events last night in German. Fulfilled am I from this exercise.
My comprehension level of the language right now I think is about 50-60% when I am really trying. I recognize many more words while listening to conversations, but I often struggle to contextualize them. Nor can I successfully respond to questions directed towards me. Even if I cannot translate what I am hearing into complete coherent sentences, I do believe that my understanding is increasing.
I think this trip has benefited my musical development in ways I had not anticipated. Having some time to myself to work on personal musical goals in the midst of other musical responsibilities has allowed me an opportunity to explore how to solve my own musical problems and to improve my self-teaching ability. A sudden thought hit me today as I was riding my bike to town. I had this realization that I am doing things I would not have even imagined myself doing 6 years ago. It was like I suddenly woke up and found myself to be a musician doing musicianly things. Even a few months ago I would not have guessed I'd be in another country. I'm excited to see what comes next.
Ha, ha! When I read the title of your entry I thought you had fallen off your bike. My first thought was, "But, Andrew, you're also a professional Martial Arts person." I guess it was a good thing I read your the rest of the blog. :-)
ReplyDeleteWow. Good job writing your schedule in German!
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm still not sure if I wrote it correctly...all a work in progress!
